These figures indicate a 1.2% increase in volume and a 9.3% increase in value compared to 2016.
Abicalçados said these improvements came thanks to “great efforts” to promote the country’s shoes in 2017 and in spite of “global political and economic turbulence”.
For his part, the organisation’s executive president, Heitor Klein, paid tribute to the “heroic” work of Brazilian footwear exporters in 2017. He said they had developed many strategies to attract overseas buyers who could have been drawn away by cheaper alternatives.
Argentina was the principal destination for Brazilian shoes in terms of volume last year, taking in 11.57 million pairs for a value of $147 million. These figures represent year-on-year increases of 22.1% in volume and 31.7% in value.
The US, previously Brazil’s leading footwear market in both value and volume, imported 11.33 million pairs. It remains the most important market in terms of value with these shoes worth a total of $190 million. Its imports of Brazilian shoes fell 14.4% in volume and 14.2% in value compared to 2016. Mr Klein said this showed Brazilian products are “losing ground” to shoes made in Asia.
