Argentina: domestic footwear production falls below 100 million pairs

The general secretary of the Argentinean footwear industry association CIC, Horacio Moschetto, has said there is a “deep feeling of worry” in the country’s shoe sector due to the “alarming decline of the domestic market”.

He explained that domestic footwear production is now below 100 million pairs. It has fallen from around 125 million pairs in 2015, he added, and this decline continues to steepen.

Mr Moschetto also addressed Argentina’s increased footwear imports, which grew from 22.6 million pairs in 2015 to 34.5 million pairs in 2017. He said this does not necessarily translate to lower prices for domestic consumers in shoe stores.

“In more organised countries they have more restrictive measures in place to protect their domestic market,” he said, adding that in Argentina “as well as the imports, we are also heading towards agreeing unbalanced trade deals, such as that with the European Union”.

In order to solve the footwear sector’s problems, Mr Moschetto asked for “a balance in the administration of imports”. He also called for steps to be taken to boost domestic consumption.
