Brazilian footwear firms fix their eyes on France

Brazilian footwear industry body Abicalçados has completed an investigative trip to France, carried out between November 25 and December 3 with a view to increasing Brazilian manufacturers’ share of the shoe market there.

According to the statistics Abicalçados has gathered on the French market, consumers there buy 400 million pairs of shoes per year, an average of six pairs per person. However, “practically all” of these shoes have to be imported. “That’s why Brazilian shoe brands have their eyes on France,” Abicalçados said at the time of the trip.

The Brazilian delegation, headed by project manager Roberta Ramos, met retail and wholesale organisations, public relations specialists and even representatives of hotel groups that could set up showrooms for Brazilian shoes. Abicalçados has promised to publish before the end of this year a detailed report on the possibilities for increasing Brazil’s share of the market.

In 2016, Brazil exported 9 million pairs of shoes to France, bringing in revenues of $56 million, figures that show an increase of 5.3% in volume and of 2% in value compared to 2015. However, in the first ten months of 2017, the volume of shoes shipped to France was 4.5 million, down by 30% year on year. In terms of value, those 4.5 million pairs exported to France so far in 2017 brought in revenues of $45 million, an increase of 4.7%.

“You can see from these figures that importers in France are now sourcing shoes from Brazil with a higher added value,” Ms Ramos said. “Our average price per pair exported to France has gone up this year from $6 to $10.”
