Weather warning from Russia for Brazilian shoe firms

Abicalçados has said it wants Brazilian footwear manufacturers to use the information it has put together to claim a larger share of a market the study values at $10 billion in 2016.
The organisation’s promotions co-ordinator, Letícia Sperb Masselli, said on announcing the study: “It’s a huge consumer market, which is going to grow at a steady rate in the next five years, with an ever-greater dependency on imported shoes.” She said that, today, 75% of the shoes sold in Russia are brought in from outside the country.
Last year, Brazilian companies shipped 1 million pairs of shoes to Russia, a 31% increase on the figure for 2015.
Ms Sperb Masselli explained that one challenge Brazilian brands face in Russia is that, although there is what she called “huge interest” in shoes from the South American country there, the perception is that Brazilian shoes are good for summer only. “Summer in Russia is very short,” she added, “lasting only two months. For the rest of the year, shoes have to have properties such as water resistance, thermal isolation and anti-slip soles for use in the ice and snow.”
She warned that few Brazilian shoe manufacturers have the capacity to incorporate details such as these into their designs at the moment.
