Ecuador dispute affects Brazilian footwear exports

15/12/2017
Brazilian footwear companies exported 9.88 million pairs of shoes in November, a drop of 10.6% compared to the same period of last year, according to the latest figures from footwear association Abicalçados.

These exports were worth $83.43 million, a slight drop compared to the value of Brazilian shoe exports in November 2016.

The executive president of Abicalçados, Heitor Klein, has said November’s disappointing results reflect an increase in the average price of a pair of Brazilian shoes, which has increased from $7.60 last November to $8.50 this year. He added that this is making the country’s footwear less competitive, especially in the US, its most important export market.

Mr Klein also revealed that November’s export figures were affected by problems selling shoes to Ecuador. He explained that since September, Brazilian footwear entering Ecuador has been subject to a new tariff of 10% plus $6 per pair due to an ongoing trade dispute between the two countries.
