April was a bright spot for Brazilian shoe companies

18/05/2018
Brazilian footwear companies exported 9.87 million pairs of shoes for a value of $93.18 million in April, according to the latest data from footwear industry body Abicalçados.

These figures represent respective increases of 18.4% and 17.6% compared to the same month of 2017.

Abicalçados executive-president, Heitor Klein, said April’s results were encouraging for Brazilian shoe companies following a difficult start to 2018.

“April’s export figures are the result of sales made during the first fairs of the year in Italy, the US and Colombia,” he explained, adding that these events had generated orders worth more than $63 million.

Mr Klein said Abicalçados expects Brazil’s shoe exports to increase slightly in 2018 compared to last year. He cautioned, however, that a lot would depend on the strength of the US dollar against the Brazilian real.

In the first four months of 2018, Brazilian companies have exported 40.36 million pairs of shoes for a total value of $344.2 million. Both figures represent improvement of 1.8% compared to the same period of last year.
