Wenzhou to hold its first ‘shoe culture week’
Wenzhou, which retained its status as China’s “shoes capital” following evaluation by China National Light Industry Council earlier this year, will play host to the city’s first-ever “shoe culture week” between June 23 and 27.
The programme includes the fourteenth China Shoes Capital (Wenzhou) Footwear Fair (June 25-27), judging of the national-level “red boots award”, plus tap-dancing events like international flash mobs along Lucheng district’s Wuma Street and other urban landmarks, which organisers said will integrate elements of local intangible cultural heritage and are all variously intended to express the idea of “Wenzhou footsteps – world rhythm”.
Last year, the output of Wenzhou’s footwear industry reached $5.9 billion or ¥42.2 billion, representing an increase of 7% year on year, according to city administrators.
It also now counts 82 shoemakers with annual revenues of at least $14 million or ¥100 million.
