Wenzhou retains ‘China shoes capital’ status
The city of Wenzhou in China’s eastern Zhejiang province has held onto the title of national “shoes capital” following evaluation by China National Light Industry Council earlier this year.

Local media suggested that the “China shoes capital” title is typically valid for a period of four years, adding that the Beijing-based body had also expressed the hope that city administrators might further increase their support for the footwear industry.

Among various ideas for improvement, the council specified the formulation of special development plans for both product and industrial optimisation, strengthening awareness of regional and national brands, promoting locally made leather footwear, deepening investment in core digital technologies and industrial internet of things (IIoT) systems, plus exploring “new materials” and innovation at the higher end of the market.

Last year, the manufacturing output of Wenzhou’s shoe industry reportedly reached ¥42.2 billion or approximately $6.1 billion in value, representing a 7% rise on the year previous.
