CICEG calls for tightening of customs procedures

A government decree in August 2014 aimed to reduce the volume of undervalued and contraband shoes that entered Mexico. Mr Gómez Tamez said this measure was initially successful, helping reduce the percentage from 40% to 20%.
The problem reared its head again in 2017, however, which Mr Gómez Tamez attributed to a loosening of customs procedures. He expressed a belief that increasing automation of these procedures has resulted in less stringent checks, which has allowed this problem to grow. He also warned that the situation will get worse if customs checks are not stricter.
For his part, CICEG president, Luis Gerardo González, said the Mexican customs agency is carrying out less checks of containers entering the country, which is allowing more undervalued products to slip through. He called for the number of checks to return to its previous level.
