US political situation worries Abicalçados

Brazilian companies exported 9.16 million pairs of shoes in February, according to the latest data from Brazilian footwear association Abicalçados. This represented a 6.8% decrease compared to the same month of 2016.

The value of these exports was $81.5 million, a 5% improvement year-on-year. Despite this increase, Heitor Klein, executive president of Abicalçados, said that it suggested the start of a slowdown in the growth of Brazilian exports, which had grown 17.5% in value in January.

He added that the forecast for Brazilian exports in 2017 is not positive. “Last year exports represented a safe haven for the Brazilian footwear industry during a time when domestic consumption was falling; in 2017 the tables have turned,” he said.

He also expressed concern about the influence of the policies of US President Donald Trump, highlighting his protectionist policies and touting of an increase in trade tariffs as especially worrying factors. He said it would be an impressive accomplishment if the industry was able to match its achievements from 2016.
