Although the volume of exports was down 0.6% compared to the same month of 2016, their value was up 17.5%.
The US was the primary destination for Brazilian footwear exports in January, with the country importing 1.3 million pairs for a value of $16 million. Argentina’s imports of shoes from Brazil increased 98% in volume and 165% in value year-on-year.
Heitor Klein, executive president of footwear association Abicalçados, said the strong start to the year was a result of sales made during the summer of last year.
He cautioned however that there was no guarantee that this positive trend would continue, given that the value of the dollar is resulting in a less competitive price for Brazilian footwear overseas. He added that it was difficult to make any predictions for 2017 due to the global uncertainty caused by the recent actions of US President Donald Trump.
