Slight recovery in Brazil's footwear exports

14/09/2016
Brazilian footwear companies exported nearly 10 million pairs of shoes in August, a 10.6% increase on the same month in 2015, according to figures from industry association Abicalçados.

There was also an increase in the value of shoes exports year-on-year, which rose 27% to $87.7 million.

For the year so far, Brazil has exported 76.5 million pairs of shoes, for a total of $617.8 million. These figures show respective increases of 2.6% and 0.8% compared to at the same point in 2015.

Heitor Klein, executive president of Abicalçados, said the slight recovery of Brazil’s shoe exports was down to strong performances at trade fairs during recent months. He added that the Expo Riva Schuh fair, which took place in June, was a particular highlight. The event saw Brazilian companies take orders worth $26 million, according to Mr Klein.

The principal destination for footwear exports between January and August was the US, to which 8 million pairs were shipped, generating $140.8 million. Argentina occupied second place with France the third most important export destination for the Brazilian footwear industry.

Rio Grande do Sul was the state that exported the most shoes during the first eight months of 2016, followed by Ceará and São Paulo.
