Spain’s national footwear museum in Elda has awarded its prestigious Medalla de Plata (Silver Medal) to local footwear designer José María Vera in recognition of his contribution to the “more creative side of the footwear world”.

In 1969, Mr Vera created a design studio called Vera Rebtato alongside his brother, Octavio. It has gone on to offer design services to local companies as well as to footwear brands from the US. He was known for his creation of a dress shoe with a sporty twist, which was seen throughout the latter part of the 20th century.

The director of the museum, Loles Esteve, said it was “deserved recognition” for a man who has “set trends in the footwear industry”. She added that Mr Vera has worked closely with the footwear museum and with the Futurmoda exhibition, and was responsible for the creation of AMEC, the Association of Spanish Footwear Designers.
