Brexit shares the blame for Spanish shoe export decline

President of the Valencian region’s main shoe industry association, Avecal, Marián Cano, has said her 220 member companies are worried that exports fell in 2016 for the first time since 2008, but that there is no need for “alarm”. In recent comments to local media she said she is sure footwear manufacturers in the region, which include those in Elche, Elda-Petrer, Villena and Vall d’Uxó, will quickly turn the export situation around.

Figures for the first nine months of 2016 show a fall in exports from these companies of 8% in value. Ms Cano said economic uncertainty among consumers, caused by a wide variety of factors, ranging from terrorist attacks in various parts of Europe to the UK’s decision to leave the European Union (with the subsequent fall in the value of sterling against the euro), was one of the reasons.

She also pointed out that the growth in demand for athletic shoes has affected Spanish producers, whose output is more focused on leather shoes and boots.
