Elda may run its own footwear fair

A public meeting will take place in the town of Elda in the Spanish province of Alicante on November 9 to examine the possibility of the town setting up a new footwear exhibition. The area around Elda, including the nearby towns of Petrer, Sax and Monóvar, is one of the most important footwear manufacturing clusters in Europe and those proposing the new event say thousands of visitors would come to view locally made, high-quality shoes.

The initial idea has come from José María Amat Amer, former director of Elda’s shoe museum, author of various books on the industry and a retired lecturer on footwear technology. He brought it up on social media in June and has had such a positive response, he feels the correct thing is to hold the public meeting to see if the new exhibition really can go ahead.

Reports in local media have said Spain’s national footwear industry association, FICE, is unhappy about the potential new development. FICE works in partnership with Madrid-based event organiser Ifema on the Momad Metrópolis exhibition and recently announced a dedicated footwear event, Momad Shoes, as a standalone spin-off to launch in February.

For his part, Mr Amat Amer has said all he wants is to enhance the reputation of manufacturers in and around Elda, help them increase sales and safeguard the future of the shoe industry there.
