Sharp dip in Alicante’s shoe exports in June

24/08/2016
Exports of shoes from Alicante, Spain’s biggest shoe-producing area, fell 32.2% in June compared to the same month in 2015. This resulted in a drop in value from €118 million to €80 million.

Alicante’s shoe exports were 14.4% lower in the first half of 2016 than the first six months of last year.

Marián Cano, general secretary of a local footwear industry association Avecal recognised that the situation was worrying but insisted that the industry should wait to see the results from upcoming footwear fairs before taking any emergency action.

She highlighted the Micam Exhibition in Milan (September 3-6) as especially important as it will allow the industry to assess the mood of potential clients.

One reason for Alicante’s poor figures could be a limited scope of export destinations. Approximately 70% of the footwear it exports goes to other countries within the European Union, which have been hit by economic uncertainty and security concerns in recent months. Industry figures are working to diversify Alicante’s export markets.
