Brazil’s footwear exports continue to fall

10/10/2018
Brazil exported 9.86 million pairs of shoes in September, a decrease of 14% compared to the same month of 2017, according to the latest data from industry body Abicalçados.

There was also a steep decline in the value of exports, which fell 26.2% year on year to $71.64 million.

The executive president of Abicalçados, Heitor Klein, said the devaluation of the currencies of emerging countries, which serve as an important export destination for Brazilian footwear companies, had had a big role to play in a difficult September. He pointed to the example of Argentina, explaining that this country’s currency, the peso, has severely declined in value in 2018.

During the first nine months of the year, Brazil’s footwear exports had a volume of 78.87 million pairs and a value of $700 million, respective decreases of 10.7% and 12% compared to 2017.
