Brazil brings in new footwear labelling standard

A new system that aims to standardise the labelling of footwear in Brazil in an effort to reduce the risk of counterfeiting came into force at the end of July.

It was published by the Brazilian Association of Technical Standards (ABNT). Among the organisations involved in developing it were footwear industry body Abicalçados, Brazil’s Association of Companies of Components for Leather, Footwear and Manufactured Goods (Assintecal) and the Centre for the Brazilian Tanning Industry (CICB).

It means that from now on, all the shoes produced in Brazil must have a label that contains information like the name of the brand, the predominant materials used in the product, and the country of origin.

Abicalçados consultant, Igor Hoelscher, said the new labelling system will benefit the consumer as it will give them detailed information about a product and make it easier to verify where it comes from. It will also reduce the chance of counterfeiting and promote fair competition, he added.

"In addition, this new standard reduces the costs for the industry as, before its publication, each manufacturer had their own method for labelling, according to the requirements of their customers,” Mr Hoelscher said.
