Top 10 footwear groups of 2016 revealed
21/06/2017
It took into account that in some cases companies’ year-end dates extended into the first months of 2017. All figures were converted into euros. It is by no means a definitive list as group revenue figures often include sales of non-footwear items and companies make public very details about the volumes of shoes they make and sell. Nevertheless, the information gives a clear top-ten list of the major players in the global footwear industry of today.
The ten groups had a combined revenue of €24.8 billion in in 2016.
The clear leader in the top ten was German group Deichmann, which actually extended its margin compared to last year’s list. Its revenue of €5,6 billion put it well clear of US brand Skechers, which claimed second place with revenue of €3.2 billion.
Hong-Kong based Belle International suffered the most significant drop from last year. Its revenue in 2016 was €2.5 billion, well down from the figure of €3.1 billion it achieved in 2015. This exemplified the drop off in its footwear business over the past 12 months; last year, its sportswear and apparel business made up more than half of total company revenue for the first time. It was also forced to close 700 footwear stores over the course of the year.
This dip saw it fall behind Skechers and Payless Shoesource in the top 10. US retail group Payless is having difficulties of its own, having filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in April. This was part of a financial and operational restructuring of the company, which also saw it announce the immediate closure of nearly 400 “underperforming” stores in the US and Puerto Rico.
Belle is the only Asian company in the top ten: six are from the US and the other three are from Europe. The list appears below.
