Earlier this month, US media reported that Payless was planning numerous layoffs as its headquarters in Topeka, Kansas. The company has now said it will “redesign its organisational structure” as part of an effort to “streamline” its headquarters. It gave no information about the potential job losses that could result from this move.
It also explained that it will expand its e-commerce business as it seeks to enlarge its domestic and international footprint.
Earlier this year, Payless told leatherbiz that moving its business exclusively online was not a solution to its problems as the retail sector is still dominated by bricks-and-mortar. It insisted the combination of online and bricks-and-mortar shopping offers consumers “the best of both worlds”.
The company also said it has appointed a new chief strategy officer, although it didn’t name them, and has promoted Neil Hansen to the role of chief financial officer.
A detailed look at Payless ShoeSource's recent struggles was included in the November/December issue of World Footwear magazine. It can be found in the technical library here.
