US shoe sales down in March

The monthly report from market research organisation NPD Group showed a 2% decline in US footwear sales in March. Total sales were valued at $2.9 billion, down from $3 billion in the same month of 2015.

Sales of performance footwear, which includes running, walking and golf shoes, saw a 3% decline to $988.8 million from $1 billion in March 2015.

There was a considerable decline in fashion footwear sales with a fall of 12% registered in March. The drop meant sales were valued at $1.1 billion, down from $1.3 billion the previous year.

Leisure footwear sales, which include mountaineering boots, casual athletic shoes and outdoor sandals, totalled $813.1 million, a 14% increase from $710.9 million in 2015.
