US footwear sales down in September

US footwear sales fell 5% year-on-year in September, according to the latest report from market research organisation The NPD Group. Total revenue generated by footwear for the month was $2.4 billion.

Fashion footwear sales suffered the most, dropping 11% to $994.8 million. The fall in popularity of performance footwear also continued. The category, which includes walking, running and basketball shoes, saw a 10% drop in revenue to $726.6 million. Leisure footwear was the category that performed best, recording a 10% increase in sales to $649.1 million.

Although sales of children’s footwear rose slightly, revenue from women’s footwear declined sharply; it saw a 7% drop to $1.1 billion. Sales of men’s footwear were down 5% to $910.5 million.
