Strength in numbers at Micam Shanghai

Italian footwear-makers have said that exhibiting alongside apparel brands for the first time at the recent Micam Shanghai trade fair meant they could present a united front to the Chinese market.

The strategy proved fruitful, with new contracts signed and orders “firmed up”.

“China is a market full of opportunities but which also presents significant hurdles, particularly for SME’s, the ability to present oneself in a cohesive manner is undoubtedly a great advantage, enabling firms to reach a critical mass essential for a market of this size,” said organisers. “As a country we were able to set aside our individualism and present a united front on the gigantic Chinese market.”

Italian clothing, footwear and accessory manufacturers presented together alongside the 23rd China International Fashion Fair.

Italy’s vice-minister for economic development, Carlo Calenda, attended which “served to underline the importance attributed by the Italian government” to the industry.

“This result shows we are all going in the right direction,” said Cleto Sagripanti, president of shoe manufacturers association Assocalzaturifici. “We are therefore confident that this is the path to follow in future.”
