Caleres keeps its eye on the weather

Footwear group Caleres has reported sales of just over $2 billion for the first nine months of 2017, an increase of 7.4% compared to the same period last year. Net earnings fell by 7.5% to $66.9 million.

The 2017 figures include sales of Allen Edmonds shoes; Caleres completed the acquisition of the high-end men’s footwear brand in December 2016.

Chief executive, Diane Sullivan, said on announcing the results that a strong start to the third quarter of 2017 had been interrupted by hurricanes in September. She said the start to the autumn had also been “unseasonably warm” in many markets, which was bad for footwear sales, but pointed out that sales have improved since the start of November with the arrival of “more seasonal weather”.
