The agreement comes after representatives from Huajian visited UNIDO on August 15 to discuss opportunities for collaboration within the framework of UNIDO’s Programme for Country Partnership (PCP).
During a meeting with Huajian chairman Zhang Huarong, UNIDO director general Li Yong commended Huajian for its contribution to industrial development in Africa, in particular through women and youth empowerment and job creation.
For his part, Mr Zhang said Huajian wants to create 100,000 jobs in Africa. He added that partnering with UNIDO would help ensure this goal is achieved in an inclusive and sustainable manner.
In April, it was revealed that Huajian is planning to invest up to $1.5 billion in shoe production in the Nigerian city of Aba. The company already operates a footwear manufacturing facility in Ethiopia and is building a new International Shoe City in the country, which is expected to be completed in 2019.
