The company inaugurated a production facility near Addis Ababa in 2012; the factory now has an output of 7,000 pairs of shoes per day.
A former manager at the site, Helen Hai, recently told the Financial Times that Huajian found productivity in Ethiopia low to begin with. She said the company observed that local people were “just not used” to working from morning until evening and, at first, there was a high level of absenteeism.
After one year, with Huajian investing heavily in training at the site, she told the FT productivity had risen to reach about 70% of the levels the company achieves in China. After two years, at the end of 2014, this had increased to 80%.
