Chinese footwear company Huajian Group has said plans to create more than 100,000 jobs at its production site in Ethiopia are on track.

Huajian announced in May that it would turn its plant in Ethiopia into a special industrial and residential zone over an area of 300 hectares in the course of the next ten years. It said in mid-December that its set-up in the African country had performed well in 2013.

Output from its Ethiopian factory in the first ten months of this year exceeded 800,000 pairs of shoes, generating revenue of $13 million.

Across the group, Huajian produces 18 million pairs of shoes a year, mostly as an outsource manufacturing partner for brands including Nine West, Coach, Guess, Marco Polo and Zara. More than 80% of its shoes are made of leather.
