Leatherbiz reported in April that the governor of Abia, Dr Okezie Ikpeazu, had met with Mr Zhang at a Nigeria-China forum and that they had agreed that Huajian would invest $1.5 billion in shoe production in the state’s main commercial city, Aba.
“The coming of Zhang Huarong and his team will boost the Aba leather and garment industry. We welcome them with our hearts to come and invest in Aba,” said Dr Ikpeazu as he welcomed Mr Huarong to the region.
He said the development would represent “healthy competition” for local footwear manufacturers and would allow them to improve their operations. He revealed the region’s target was to “conquer the African leather and garment market”.
Mr Huarong explained that the visit was designed to assess the readiness of Abia for the investment. He said Huajian is ready to deliver the project quickly.
As part of the project, local shoemakers will travel to China for training. Dr Ikpeazu said the first batch of them will depart in the next week.
