Applications open for second Maestri d’Eccellenza

Submissions are now open for the second edition of luxury group LVMH’s Maestri d’Eccellenza award, in partnership with Italian artisanal skills body Confartigianato and Camera Nazionale della Moda Italiana, the National Chamber of Italian Fashion.

For the first time, applications from makers of furniture and home accessories are encouraged. Local craftspeople are invited to apply until May 15.

This year, the competition is run alongside LVMH-owned partner Loro Piana, which “best represents Italian excellence”, as the group put it.

Nine finalists will be selected: three for master-level entrants with at least five years’ experience, three for emerging artisans and three for heritage-minded innovators.

“We recognise our responsibility to perpetuate craftmanship for future generations,” commented Loro Piana chief executive, Damien Bertrand, who will also serve as a jury member.

“We must pass on to them not only technical skills, but also a respect for tradition, a passion for excellence and innovation. Only in this way can we ensure that the heritage of Italian craftsmanship continues flourish into the future. Preserving and promoting know-how is at the heart of Loro Piana’s philosophy.”

Three winners will receive €10,000 or roughly $10,800 for their business, up to one year’s mentoring with Loro Piana experts and the opportunity to learn house manufacturing processes first-hand, at its factories.
