Tod’s photography exhibition spotlights artisanship
Footwear and leathergoods brand Tod’s, headquartered in Italy’s Marche region, will officially unveil the results of its creative partnership with British photographer Tim Walker during an evening event at Milan Design Week on April 19.
The project retells the making stories behind flagship company designs like the casual Gommino loafer and Di handbag style in Mr Walker’s own surrealistic, dreamlike visual language, with outsized shoe lasts, leather sheets, spools of thread, wooden brushes and more all playing a prominent role throughout.
A day at the Tod’s factory alongside set designer and collaborator Gary Card convinced the photographer of the need to spotlight the value of specialised artisanal skills in the context of an increasingly digital and machine-heavy world, he told reporters.
Mr Walker’s original photographs will be displayed inside the city’s Museo Nazionale della Scienza e della Tecnologia Leonardo da Vinci’s Cavallerizze space initially, where they will be on show to the public until April 22. The exhibition will then tour internationally later this year.
