Louis Vuitton reportedly closing Hong Kong store
Following seven months of anti-government protests, luxury brand Louis Vuitton is reportedly closing its store in Hong Kong’s Time Square mall (pictured). The decision to leave was said to be made in response to the mall’s owner refusing to lower rent on Louis Vuitton’s space despite the brand’s falling sales.

The closure was reported by the South China Morning Post, which cited sources familiar with the matter, though LVMH had not yet commented on the decision. The newspaper also said that, in light of sales being impacted by the protests, some Hong Kong sales staff have been temporarily reassigned to stores in mainland China, where consumers who have long come for the deals in Hong Kong are now staying home to shop.

The Times Square mall location isn’t Louis Vuitton’s only one in the area; the LVMH label has eight stores in Hong Kong. Louis Vuitton has previously announced plans to open a store at Hong Kong International Airport in 2021.

In August, when the protests were in an earlier stage and largely limited to the weekends, Italian fashion house Prada announced that it would close its store in Hong Kong's Causeway Bay district in June 2020, when its seven-year lease expires.
