The discount retailer took over a store in Los Angeles and stocked it with the shoes typically found in its stores. It then invited customers to what they believed was the launch party for a new luxury brand, which it called Palessi.
According to local media reports, the ‘store’ made sales of more than $3,000 in the first few hours, with customers paying up to $600 for products, well above their actual value.
The company then recorded their surprised reactions as they found out that the shoes they had purchased were actually from Payless. This content will now be featured in a series of TV advertisements as part of a campaign known as ‘The Payless Experiment’.
So what about the customers who overspent on Payless shoes? The company did not charge them for their purchases.
