First phase of Tod’s-led Colosseum restoration complete
The first phase of a major project to restore Rome’s Colosseum has been completed with the help of luxury shoe maker Tod’s, who is contributing €25 million to the initiative. A ceremony celebrating the completion was attended by Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi and Tod’s CEO Diego Della Valle.

“Restoring such an important monument, a worldwide symbol of Italy, which carries a strong synergy between public and private sector is a motivation which we would like followed by others, commencing with the large Italian businesses,” said Mr Della Valle.

Over the past three years, water misters and hand brushes were used to remove pollution and grime from the Colosseum’s northern and southern facades. The landmark’s arch enclosure system was also replaced with new gates. The second phase of the project restore the underground passageways, vaults and pits that once housed the animals and gladiators who fought in the arena.
