Report says ‘retro’ shoes lead US footwear sector

23/06/2016
Reissued or “heritage” shoes outstripped all other footwear categories last year in the US, according to a report from the Wall Street Journal. Sales of ‘retro’ shoes grew more than 50% in 2015 and made up 20% of the US athletic footwear market, which is worth $17.2 billion. The data was compiled by consultancy company NPD Group.

Sportswear manufacturers, such as adidas and Nike, are increasingly turning to designs from previous decades to capitalise on nostalgia from older consumers who remember the classic designs of previous decades. These designs also appeal to younger consumers seeing them for the first time.

Nike is already planning to reissue tennis and basketball shoes from the 1960s and can also rely on its Michael Jordan range with sales of the Air Max and Air Jordan still high nearly 20 years after the iconic athlete’s retirement from professional sport.

In 2015, adidas’ sold 8 million pairs of classic Stan Smith shoes, which made their debut in the 1970s and now form part of the ‘Originals’ line. Originals general manager, Arthur Hoeld, describes them as the “backbone of our success”.
