Italy’s footwear industry sees companies close and jobs go
Italy’s footwear manufacturing industry witnessed the closure of almost 200 companies in the first half of 2019 and lost almost 1,000 jobs, according to figures released by main industry body, Assocalzaturifici.

In a statement, Assocal said 119 footwear manufacturing firms had closed down between January and June 2019, with a loss of 492 jobs. Over the same period, 75 footwear component manufacturers also closed their doors, resulting in the loss of a further 493 workers.

Its figures for 2018 indicated that there were 4,500 footwear companies in Italy and that the industry employed a total of 75,600 people, making shoes with a value of €14.3 billion per year.

Commenting on the figures, Assocal president, Siro Badon (pictured), said: “To get through this difficult period we need to invest in ourselves and in our skills. It is essential to train new professionals so that they can bring innovation to Italian footwear manufacturing companies.”
