Mercosur trade agreement ‘extremely positive’ Assocalzaturifici says
Italy’s main footwear industry body, Assocalzaturifici, has welcomed the prospect of an abolition of duties on exports to South America of the shoes its member companies make. Duties should lift within a few years of ratification of the proposed free trade agreement between the European Union and the Mercosur trading block, which comprises Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay and Paraguay.

Assocalzaturifici said that, in 2018, its member companies exported just over 300,000 pairs of footwear to Mercosur countries, bringing in revenues of €15.5 million. In the last ten years, it said, this market has grown by 58% in volume and by 85% in value. “But there is still huge growth potential,” the association added.

It pointed out that high import duties have prevented Italian footwear companies from fulfilling that growth potential “despite the strong appeal of Italian products in South America”. At present, duties of 35% apply to shoes imported from the European Union. Tariffs of 17% apply to footwear imported into the EU from Mercosur countries.

The new president of Assocalzaturifici, Siro Badon, has described the trade agreement as “an extremely positive result for the Italian footwear sector”.
