Brazil’s footwear exports up in volume but down in value in first half

15/07/2019
Brazilian footwear manufacturers exported 58.3 million pairs of shoes during the first half of 2019, an increase of 5.3% compared to the same period of the previous year.

Data from Brazilian footwear industry body Abicalçados shows, however, that the value of these exports was down 1.3% to $480.7 million.

The US was the most important export market for Brazilian shoes in the first six months of the year. It took in a total of 6.4 million pairs at a total cost of $101.25 million, year-on-year increases of 28.4% and 34.6% respectively.

Argentina followed on in second, although exports to this market were 37.2% lower in volume and 41.8% lower in value compared to the first half of 2018. France was the third most important destination for exports.

Abicalçados executive president, Heitor Klein, echoed his earlier statements that the Brazilian footwear sector is benefiting from the ongoing trade dispute between the US and China. “US importers are looking for footwear suppliers in countries other than China,” he said.
