The president of the main footwear industry body in the Mexican state of Jalisco (CICEJ), José Arias, has said the shoe sector there is still suffering from a lack of skilled workers, particularly in the area of stitching.

Speaking to local media, he reiterated that there was a need for 5,000 more trained workers. Beyond stitching, the cutting and assembly stages of the production process are also areas of concern.

He explained: “There used to be apprenticeships and skills would be transmitted from generation to generation. This is no longer the case, with children going into other areas, resulting in a paucity of trained people.”

Mr Arias also revealed that a new footwear training institute will launch in Guadalajara, Jalisco’s state capital, in the next month. It will offer specialist training in various areas of footwear production. He said the cost of courses would be as low as possible in an effort to reach as many people as possible.
