Argentinean retailers want to bring Father’s Day forward to help halt falling sales

Retailers in Argentina, including those in the shoe sector, have written to the government to ask them to bring forward Father’s Day there.

Traditionally, Argentina celebrates Father’s Day on the third Sunday in June, which this year falls on June 18. However, that Sunday is also likely to be part of a long weekend for many Argentinean families as it falls on the feast of Pentecost.

Retailers, complaining of 17 consecutive months of falling sales, have asked the government to make the previous Sunday, June 11, Father’s Day this year, saying they cannot afford to miss out on the sales boost that the Father’s Day weekend normally brings them. Shoes are one of the most popular gifts for families to give fathers in Argentina, along with clothing, electronic items and sporting goods.
