Indian government aims to create leather and footwear jobs

The Indian government has announced it will invest around $400 million over the next three years in an effort to generate employment in the country’s leather and footwear sectors.

The decision was taken at a meeting by the cabinet in New Delhi. It said the investment could help generate more than 300,000 jobs and assist in the formalisation of 200,000 positions.

"The scheme would lead to development of infrastructure for the leather sector, address environment concerns specific to the leather sector, facilitate additional investments, employment generation and increase production,” the government said in an official statement.

The scheme would also see tax incentives being offered to companies that make large-scale investments in these industries.
