JM Weston sends young shoemakers to Japan
Two young French artisans have won the prize of a lifetime from the JM Weston Foundation, an organisation set up in 2011 by the famous footwear brand.

With the support of the Foundation, Clémence Rochard and Emma-Léa Maréchal, are spending two months this autumn in Tokyo to increase their knowledge and advance their skills, working with Japanese footwear artisan Yohei Fukuda.

In recent comments to French media on the initiative, Clémence Rochard said one of the first things she has noticed is that making a shoe in Japan seems to her to require more precision and exactness than she has been used to in France. She said that in her home country “a certain artistic spirit” holds sway and leaves room for “less rigour”.
