The main aim of the association, Calzaes, is to stimulate training programmes for footwear workers, as well as helping them gain access to the most innovative technologies and materials. It will also collaborate with other footwear organisations to formulate export strategies and develop industry guidelines.
According to Fernando Monterrosa, president of Calzaes, El Salvador currently has 280 footwear companies, which generate between 4,000 and 5,000 jobs.
Data from El Salvador’s national bank (BCR), shows that the country exported footwear worth $57.5 million in 2016. The main destinations for these exports were the US. Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua.
