Minister says school shoe programme has been good for Salvadorian manufacturers

A programme set up by the government of El Salvador to supply schoolchildren with shoes made by local producers is working so well that many of the manufacturers engaged in the programme are now able to export their shoes to other countries, such as Guatemala and Costa Rica.

A junior minister in El Salvador’s ministry of commerce and industry, Merlin Barrera, said on announcing the development that she was sure having the Salvadorian government as a principal customer had helped footwear manufacturers in the Central American country expand their businesses.

She said that the government’s commitment to providing shoes, made by local producers, to children in Salvadorian schools, at no cost to parents, had helped make the domestic shoe industry stronger. The government’s argument is that if children are given shoes, a uniform and school materials free of charge, the children will be more likely to keep turning up for school.
