Speaking in the build-up to the first edition of the year of the Momad Shoes exhibition in Madrid (March 4-6), Mr Fernández, who last year took up the position of chairman of the event’s organising committee, said it was important for Spain to have its own footwear exhibition because 35% of all the shoes the country’s manufacturers produce are for the domestic market.
He said in comments to media in Spain: “The strength of the footwear industry in Spain is that we have continued to manufacture shoes, something that has disappeared in many other parts of Europe. It’s not cheap to make shoes and the process is complex, but it’s the heart that moves this industry and that’s why it hasn’t suffered the same levels of decimation as other sectors, even though the biggest cost is labour.”
