Aquazzura suing Steve Madden for design infringement

Italian luxury shoe brand Aquazzura has accused US footwear company Steve Madden of copying its designs, the second such case it has brought before a court in recent weeks. It has requested a court order blocking the sale and manufacture of styles it deems as infringing on the Aquazzura brand and calls for any unsold goods to be destroyed.

According to the lawsuit filed in a New York court, Aquazzura says Steve Madden’s Sassey heel with fringe and ankle wrap detail copies the company’s own Wild Thing design. It also alleges that its Belgravia flat and pump, Sexy Thing bootie and Christy flat have been copied. Aquazzura argues that shoes in question have become so widely recognised and associated with the brand that they are protected by law.

It says that Steve Madden is deliberately trying to “confuse and mislead consumers” by copying the designs and attempting to “divert business from Aquazzura”.

Last week, Aquazzura accused Ivanka Trump, daughter of US presidential candidate Donald Trump, and her shoe label partner Marc Fisher Footwear, of infringing on the design of its Wild Thing sandal and Forever Marilyn pump.
