Imports of cheap shoes into Mexico go down

18/08/2015
Consumers in Mexico bought 303 million pairs of shoes in 2014. Mexican manufacturers made 245 million pairs in the course of the year, exporting 27 million of them, while retailers and traders brought 70 million pairs of imported footwear into the country. Retailers’ inventories account for the rest of the 303 million.

The figures came from Guanajuato footwear industry association CICEG; the organisation’s president, Javier Plascencia Ruiz, released them during a presentation ahead of the next edition of the Sapica exhibition, which will take place in León from August 25-28.

Mr Plascencia said that imports of “falsely cheap” shoes are in decline thanks to measures imposed by the Mexican government. He said that imports into Mexico of these products declined by 59% between October 2014 and June 2015.
