ASEAN Economic Community could make 2015 a big year for Vietnamese shoes

Vietnam’s leather and footwear industry association Lefaso has said 2015 could be an important year for the country’s shoe manufacturers because they are likely to gain duty-free access to all Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) markets.

ASEAN members (Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Brunei, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar and Vietnam) have pledged to implement the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) this year, giving manufacturers and brands in each country single-market access to ASEAN’s 600 million consumers.

In comments at the start of 2015, Lefaso secretary general, Phan Thi Thanh Xuan, said Vietnam achieved shoe sales of $1.8 billion in ASEAN partner states last year, making the prospects for growth under the AEC strong.
