China’s leather output on par with 2013 levels
Reports from China suggest tanners produced 493.8 million square-metres of leather in the first 10 months of this year.
This is only 0.22% lower than the volume in the same period last year, reports the China Leather Industry Association quoting the China National Light Industry.
Perhaps surprisingly, they say the leather output in Hebei province was 11.6 million square-metres from January to October, 8.6% higher than the year-ago period. This is despite the fact hundreds of tanneries deemed too polluting were closed in the region since the end of last year.
The Leather Pipeline market intelligence reports, published by sister sites www.leatherbiz.com, suggest the closures have affected the skins industry the most, as Hebei is the centre of this type of tanning. However, official figures have presented a picture of overall production levels being generally unaffected.
