The founder of footwear manufacturing group Stella International, Jiang Zhigang, has travelled to his home town, Shaoyang City in Hunan province in the south-west of the country, to finalise plans to transform it into a footwear manufacturing hub.

Stella International already has centres of production in Guangdong, Guangxi, Hebei, Shanghai and Liaoning provinces and its corporate headquarters in Hong Kong, providing a total of 80,000 jobs, but Mr Jiang wants to do more to help his home city.

In recent years he has donated more than $1.5 million to Shaoyang to help fund new schools, roads and bridges. Two footwear factories have already begun operations there and Mr Jiang has said he is keen to increase production and fund further infrastructure improvements in the town.

Official figures put Shaoyang’s population at seven million.
