Indian conglomerate Tata has announced plans to triple the size of its footwear factory, based near its largest tannery in Dewas.

The Tannery of the Year finalist supplies to European footwear brands such as Peter Kaiser, Gabor, Ara, Lloyd, as well as Zara and Mango.

OK Kaul, Tata International’s executive director, told sister publication World Leather a change is taking place in the Indian market, particularly among young, professional women. There is a clear shift from traditional saris to skirts and trouser suits, and demand for more fashionable women’s shoes has grown as a result.

The Dewas based footwear factory is being expanded to produce to 2.5 million pairs of shoes per year form the current 700,000, and will create 4,000 jobs.

Tata has its own footwear design centre near Florence, which produces design ideas and prototypes for major clients.
